It’s official, Movie Pass is dead.

Back when Movie Pass was created in 2011, it had a lot of skeptics from theater chains, but they lived in happiness and obscurity since tons of people who had no idea what it was. Flash forward in this current flash back to 2017, when it took the world by storm, and by the world I mean mostly people of our generation who want to cheap out on outrageous ticket prices.

In case you were living under the world’s most isolated rock, Movie Pass used to offer unlimited tickets to select movies for one, low subscription fee. People absolutely abused this offer, going to see crappy movies they would never otherwise see, running Movie Passes wallet dry. Which led to Movie Pass’ downfall. One that was “totally” a “huge surprise” to “everybody”, because who could have seen it coming?

Since Movie Pass never actually got revenue from this business model, which is like the one thing that companies are designed to do. Movie pass tried various changes to their model - like limiting subscribers to 3 tickets a month - but it ultimately couldn’t fix the huge deficit they built up. In September they put Movie Pass on indefinite hiatus after the last of their board members resigned.

That leads us to today, when Movie Pass officially filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. If you had hope that Movie Pass could potentially revive itself, just do yourself a favor and throw that hope in the trash. Since Movie Pass is dismantling, they announced that they’re going to be selling what little they have of their assets to pay off their creditors.

Oddly enough, in their files Movie Pass listed their subscribers under their creditors, so who knows, if you are still subscribed to Movie Pass for some ungodly reason, you may be eligible for a refund.

Anyways, let’s take a moment of silence for the upper echelon of industry rich enough to create services that do nothing but burn money. Movie Pass was a perfect, although fleeting, service for students like us.
